By role
HR technology (HR tech) is the software organisations use to hire, manage, pay, train and engage their people: a human resource information system (HRIS), payroll, an applicant tracking system (ATS), a learning management system (LMS), engagement surveys and analytics. Most of it reduces process risk. Far less of it reduces people insight risk.
The main categories
The core system of record is the HRIS, usually paired with payroll. Around it sit the specialist tools: an ATS for recruitment, onboarding software for new starters, an LMS for training and compliance, performance and engagement tools for feedback and surveys, and people analytics for reporting across all of it. Some vendors sell suites that cover several categories; others do one category deeply.
Two kinds of risk
Most HR tech was built to make processes faster and more accurate: fewer payroll errors, cleaner records, compliant training, tidy pipelines. That is process risk, and the tools handle it well. The costlier mistakes come from people insight risk: the wrong hire, the top performer who disengages, training that ticks a box and builds nothing. A stack that only addresses the first leaves HR making the second kind of decision without evidence.
Choosing well
Start from the decisions you need to make, not the features on a vendor's list. Write down your requirements, separate the must-haves from the nice-to-haves, and ask every vendor how their product helps with both kinds of risk. Then check how the data connects, because a stack of tools that each hold a slice of the picture still leaves someone stitching it together in a spreadsheet.

What is an HR tech stack?
The set of HR systems an organisation runs together, typically an HRIS and payroll at the core with recruitment, learning, engagement and analytics tools around them.
Is it better to buy a suite or separate tools?
A suite gives you one vendor and one login; separate tools usually go deeper in each category. The deciding question is whether the data and the insight connect across hiring, engagement and development, whichever way you buy.
