For startups

Hire right the first time.
Build culture on purpose.

Compono is an applicant tracking system (ATS) and employee engagement platform for startups of 5 to 100 people. It does the process work every HR tool does, and finds what they miss: who fits the role, the team and the culture you are building. If payroll is the problem, buy a lightweight HRIS instead.

How it shows up for startups

Hiring eats the founder's week

With no recruiter and no people team, the founder writes the ad, reads every application and makes the call. That work does not get faster as the list gets longer, so the roles that matter most are the ones that stay open.

Across 1,200 venture-backed startups, roles at companies under 25 people took 62 days to fill without a recruiter and 42 days with one.

Culture sets itself while you are busy

The first ten hires decide how the company argues, decides and works, whether or not anyone writes it down. By the time it reads as a problem it is a habit, and it is being defended by the people who set it.

Only 20% of employees strongly agree they feel connected to their organisation's culture, measured in May 2026.

No record of who can do what

Skills sit in the founder's head and in a spreadsheet someone keeps updated. The first time an insurer, an auditor or a new compliance hire asks who is qualified to do a given task, there is nothing to hand over.

Jobs and Skills Australia is building a National Skills Taxonomy so skills can be described in one common language. Most companies under 100 people have no record to describe.

Compono Engage

An employee engagement platform that shows you the culture you have

  • Like any engagement platformPulse survey, engagement score and response rate
  • And what only Compono findsHow the team really behaves, across 12 dimensions

Engage runs the pulse survey and gives you the score, like any engagement tool. It also measures culture across 12 dimensions, current against desired, alongside climate and the work personalities already in the room. At twelve people that is a conversation you can still act on. At a hundred it is a project.

One platform, one engine.

Hire, Engage, Develop and Assure run on one validated behavioural science engine, so what you learn about a candidate in Hire is the same read you get on the team in Engage. You start with one product and the second one already knows your people. People decisions backed by behavioural science and AI.

Common questions

Yes. Compono Hire is a full applicant tracking system: job ads, a careers page, applications in one pipeline, and a ranked shortlist. What a startup usually buys it for is the ranking, because it reads fit for the role and the team, not keywords in a CV.

An HR and payroll platform holds the employment record and runs contracts, leave and pay, and it should keep doing that. Compono runs the hiring and the culture work beside it, and finds what the record cannot show: who fits the role and the team, how the team actually works, where capability is thin. Compono does not run payroll or interpret awards, so most startups keep both.

Yes, and the return arrives sooner than at fifty, because your next hire is a fifth of the company. The setup is a job ad, a role profile and your own team as the benchmark. Most five-person teams start with Hire alone and add Engage at around twenty people.

For a team under 100, one product is circa $5.5k to $6.5k AUD a year, and a second product comes down by about 30%. Under 50 people, the Ambitious 50 offer is six months free on the platform with a $1,000 onboarding fee. Full bands are on the pricing page.

Single sign-on with your identity provider, so nobody manages another password, and job ads posted to SEEK and the major job boards. Anything beyond that is scoped per customer against the stack you already run, so tell us what you have and we will be straight about what connects before you buy.

No. The assessments, the role profiles and the ranking are built in, and the output reads as plain language rather than a psychometric report. Founders run it themselves until there is a first people hire, which is usually somewhere between 30 and 50 staff.

Nothing changes except the price band. The role profiles, culture reads and hiring history you built at ten people are the baseline you compare against at 200, which is the part a startup cannot buy back later.

Compono is built in Australia and New Zealand and your data is hosted there wherever your team sits. The product is used by teams across Australia, New Zealand and further afield, and the assessments and the ranking work the same way in any English-speaking market.

Talk to us about your first twenty hires.

Tell us the roles you are about to open and the team you are building around them. We will walk you through how Hire ranks a shortlist, answer the awkward questions, and say so if a payroll tool is what you actually need.
