Get Started ≫Singapore provides 16 weeks of Government-Paid Maternity Leave, 4 weeks of mandatory Government-Paid Paternity Leave, and a shared parental leave pool of 10 weeks for children born from 1 April 2026, largely government-funded and administered through the employer.
The entitlements as they stand
Working mothers of Singapore citizen children receive 16 weeks of maternity leave, government-paid in whole or part depending on birth order. Fathers receive 4 weeks of paternity leave, mandatory (no longer employer-voluntary) for children born from 1 April 2025. On top, the new shared parental leave scheme gives parents a shared pool, 6 weeks for births from April 2025, stepping to 10 weeks for births from 1 April 2026, split between parents by agreement and government-paid up to a weekly cap. Adoption and unpaid infant-care leave sit alongside.
The employer mechanics
Leave is claimed through the employer, who pays and is reimbursed by the government for the funded portions, so the visible cost is cashflow and cover rather than the salary line itself. Eligibility generally requires the child to be a Singapore citizen and the parent to have been employed for a qualifying period before the birth, which payroll needs to verify before promising figures. The 2025-26 expansion means two employees with due dates weeks apart can hold materially different entitlements; onboarding templates and parental-leave policies should quote the scheme rules by birth date, not a single number.
Regional comparison for planning
Singapore's paid quantum (16 weeks maternity plus 4 paternity plus a 10-week shared pool) is now among the more generous in the region and is government-funded to a degree Australia's employer market and New Zealand's IRD-paid scheme structure differently. What stays constant across all three: the leave is the plannable part, and the organisations that struggle are the ones that treat a five-month absence with nine months' notice as a surprise.
Leave cover is predictable workforce planning. Do it before the gap opens.
See how it worksCommon questions
Who pays for parental leave in Singapore?
The employer administers and pays, and the government reimburses the funded portions (fully for most entitlements, subject to caps). The employer's real costs are cover and continuity.
How much shared parental leave applies right now?
Ten weeks for children born on or after 1 April 2026; six weeks for births in the year before that. The applicable amount follows the child's date of birth, not the date of the request.
