Compono vs Predictive Index

The Predictive Index is the closest thing on this page to a direct rival: a genuinely validated behavioural assessment with team analytics, wrapped in software. The structural difference is the delivery model. PI grew out of a management consultancy and is sold substantially through certified partners, workshops and certification. Here's the honest breakdown.

Before the brand: personality assessments

Workplace personality tools are popular for good reason. The well-known ones are accessible, quick to run, easy to interpret and genuinely useful for self-awareness. Their limits are just as consistent. Most read the individual in isolation, through general personality rather than behaviour at work, and say nothing about the team around them. Trait-based instruments go deeper and can be highly valid, but they're complex to interpret and usually need certification: a big jackhammer for a small problem. What matters is whether the instrument was built for work, and whether it can see the team as well as the person.

The short answer

Choose Predictive Index if you want

  • A fast, heavily validated behavioural and cognitive screen with 70 years of pedigree
  • A partner-led model: consultants, workshops and executive coaching around the data
  • A simple four-factor language (and 17 reference profiles) managers pick up quickly

Choose Compono if you want

  • Insight built into the product rather than delivered through paid practitioners
  • Culture and climate actually measured, not a once-a-year engagement survey
  • Assessment, hiring workflow, engagement, capability and competency on one platform

What Predictive Index genuinely does well

  • Assessment pedigree. Founded 1955, EFPA-certified behavioural assessment, 400+ criterion validity studies, and 5.7 million assessments completed in 2024 on PI's own figures. The instrument is not the weak point.
  • Speed. A six-minute behavioural assessment and a twelve-minute cognitive assessment are genuinely low-friction for candidates.
  • Team analytics. Team Discovery's nine Team Types, built from 125,000+ employees across 20,000+ teams, is a real team-composition lens few assessment rivals match.
  • The partner machine. For buyers who want facilitated change management and executive coaching wrapped around behavioural data, 480+ certified partners is a strength.

Where Compono differs

The question is where the intelligence lives. PI's own history is a management consultancy that added software, and the model still shows: value arrives through certified partners, six workshops and a certification program, all costed on top of the subscription. That suits organisations that want a consulting relationship. If you'd rather the product carry the interpretation, the economics and the dependency look different.

And behavioural data is where PI stops. Four factors from an adjective checklist, with engagement covered by one annual survey and no culture or climate measurement at all. Compono measures work personality alongside culture and climate, on its own normative data, then puts the results to work in the same platform: hiring with the ATS workflow included, capability through Develop, competency through Assure. In Australia that comes with a Brisbane-based team rather than a partner directory.

More than an assessment

Everything above compares assessment capability. Compono's work-personality data doesn't stop at a profile: Hire matches candidates against the role and your measured culture, Engage reads team work-personality mix alongside culture and climate, and Develop points development at what the measurement actually found. The profile is the start of the dataset, not the deliverable.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PI Behavioral Assessment valid?

Yes, genuinely. It's EFPA-certified with hundreds of criterion validity studies behind it. The comparison isn't about the instrument; it's about the model around it: what the platform measures beyond behaviour, and how much of the value depends on paid practitioners and workshops.

What does "services-heavy" mean in practice?

PI is sold and delivered substantially through 480+ certified partner firms, with a six-workshop certification path and more than 12,000 workshop completions a year. Budget for the subscription plus workshops, certification and partner consulting, because the software assumes trained practitioners.

Does Predictive Index measure culture?

No. Engagement is covered by a 50-question survey recommended annually, benchmarked against roughly 25,000 respondents, and there's no culture or climate measurement in the product line. Compono Engage measures your culture against your intended culture, with climate read alongside.

Does PI work well in Australia?

The assessment works anywhere; the support model is the question. PI has no Australian office and serves ANZ through a small partner licensee network, with globally-weighted norms. Compono is Australian-built, Brisbane-based, and normed on its own data.
