Compono vs Employment Hero
Two Australian platforms doing very different jobs. Employment Hero consolidates HR admin, payroll and recruitment for small businesses. Compono measures who people are and how they fit, then puts that evidence behind hiring, engagement and development decisions. Here's the honest breakdown.

An HRIS is genuinely useful, and most businesses need one. Payroll, leave, records and onboarding admin belong in a system built for exactly that. The trade-off arrives with the bundle: hiring, learning and engagement modules that exist because the suite needed them, not because they're good. The HRIS wins the deal on admin, so the people modules only have to be passable, and it shows. In fact, plenty of the specialist technology inside these suites is white-labelled from other vendors; Compono's own technology is embedded in HRIS platforms without you even knowing.

What Employment Hero does genuinely well
- AU payroll and compliance depth. Native award interpretation and local compliance across AU, NZ, UK, Singapore and Malaysia, plus Canada. This is real, localised payroll, not a US product with an Australian skin.
- Breadth per dollar for small business. HR, payroll, recruitment and engagement in one bill, with a free ATS tier, is hard to beat on cost for a 10-100 person company.
- Recruitment automation at volume. SmartMatch sourcing plus Recruitment Agent AI video screening (with a claimed 75% reduction in screening time) suits high-volume, process-driven hiring.
- An employee-facing superapp. The Employment Hero Jobs app gives employees pay access, benefits and discounts in one place, which genuinely helps adoption.
Where Compono differs
HR carries two kinds of risk. Process risk is payroll errors, compliance gaps and admin drag, and Employment Hero attacks that hard. People insight risk is the wrong hire, the disengaged top performer, the team that looks fine on paper and breaks in practice. That second risk needs measurement, not automation.
Compono is built for it. Validated work-personality assessment across the 8 types, culture and climate measured with real instruments, and candidates matched against what your organisation actually is rather than what an AI infers from a video interview. If your biggest problem is admin, Employment Hero does that job well. If your biggest problem is decisions about people, that's ours.

Where Compono fits next to an HRIS
A note on fit: Compono isn't an HRIS and doesn't want to be. Keep your payroll and records system; it's good at admin. Compono covers the people decisions an HRIS can't see: who to hire, what your culture actually is, where capability is missing and how to build it. The two run side by side, and plenty of our customers do exactly that.

Frequently asked questions
Is Compono a replacement for Employment Hero?
Usually not, because they do different jobs. Employment Hero's centre of gravity is employment admin: payroll, compliance, contracts and low-cost recruitment for SMEs. Compono's is people insight: validated assessment, culture measurement and hiring decisions you can defend. Some organisations run admin in one system and people decisions in Compono.
Does Employment Hero assess candidates?
It matches CVs and profiles through SmartMatch, and its Recruitment Agent advertises AI video assessment of cognitive, vocational and cultural fit. As of July 2026 there is no published, validated psychometric framework behind those claims. Compono's assessment is a validated work-personality instrument matched against your measured culture.
Does Compono do payroll?
No. Compono covers hiring, engagement, capability and competency, and sits alongside whatever system runs your payroll. If AU-native payroll is your main requirement, Employment Hero is genuinely strong there.
Are both platforms Australian?
Yes. Employment Hero was founded in Sydney in 2014 and Compono is Brisbane-based. The difference isn't geography, it's the job: employment administration versus people intelligence.
