Compono vs Culture Amp

Two platforms that both take culture seriously, built for different jobs. Culture Amp is the world's best-known engagement survey platform. Compono measures culture and climate too, then connects that data to hiring, development and workforce decisions. Here's the honest breakdown.

Before the brand: engagement surveys

Engagement surveys are the category everyone knows, and running one beats running nothing. The limits show up in practice. Pulse and temperature checks tell you how people feel this week, not what's driving it: a reading without a diagnosis. The data also arrives faster than most teams can act on it, so round four lands before round one changed anything. Benchmarks tell you where you sit against other companies, not whether your culture fits your strategy. And because most tools let you add any question you like, it's surprisingly easy to invalidate your own survey: untested questions quietly break reliability, and changed questions break comparability between rounds.

The short answer

Choose Culture Amp if you want

  • The deepest engagement benchmark dataset available (1.5 billion+ questions answered)
  • A mature, survey-led listening program with an in-house people-science team behind it
  • Engagement, performance and development in one dedicated employee-experience platform

Choose Compono if you want

  • Culture and climate data that connects directly to hiring, so who you bring in strengthens the culture you measured

  • One platform spanning hiring, engagement, capability and competency, sized for mid-market teams

What Culture Amp does genuinely well

  • Benchmarks with real depth. More than 1.5 billion answered survey questions makes theirs arguably the largest engagement benchmark dataset anywhere.
  • People science you can lean on. An in-house people-science team and consulting support, not just software.
  • A complete listening suite. Engagement, lifecycle and pulse surveys with performance and development alongside, plus an AI Coach now included in subscriptions.
  • Proven at scale. 6,000+ customers including Canva, McDonald's and Etsy, with broad HRIS, Slack and Teams integrations.

Where Compono differs

We think benchmarks are a bit of a furphy. Knowing you scored higher than 6,000 other companies tells you where you sit. It doesn't tell you whether your culture is the right one for your strategy, or whether the team you have is built for the culture you're trying to grow. Compono measures your culture against your intended culture, reads climate alongside it, and maps your team's work-personality mix against what the culture needs. The reference point is your goals, not somebody else's average.

Consistency is what makes progress measurable. The more survey questions change or open up from round to round, the less comparable the results become, and the harder it is to prove anything moved. Compono uses validated organisational-psychology instruments that measure the same properties the same way every time, so this quarter's result means something against last quarter's.

And because it's one platform, that culture data doesn't stop at a dashboard. The same measurements profile every candidate before you hire, connect development to real capability gaps, and give you evidence for the decisions you have to defend.

More than engagement measurement

Everything above compares engagement and culture measurement, because that's what brings people to this page. The same measurements run through the rest of the platform: Hire profiles candidates against your measured culture before day one, Develop points learning at real capability gaps, and Assure covers competency and credentialling. The culture you measure becomes the culture you hire and develop for.

Frequently asked questions

Is Compono a replacement for Culture Amp?

Sometimes, not always. If you mainly need benchmark-led engagement surveys, Culture Amp is excellent at exactly that. Compono replaces it when you want culture measurement connected to hiring and capability decisions in one platform rather than a standalone listening tool.

Does Culture Amp help with hiring?

No. As of July 2026 Culture Amp has no hiring, ATS or candidate assessment module; its focus is engagement, performance and development for existing employees. Compono profiles candidates against your measured culture before they're hired.

Can I run engagement surveys in Compono?

Yes. Compono Engage measures culture and climate using validated organisational-psychology instruments, and reads the results alongside your team's work-personality mix so you know what to act on.

Isn't a bigger benchmark dataset better?

Bigger tells you more about everyone else. A benchmark shows where you sit against other companies; it can't tell you whether your culture is right for your goals, or whether your team is built for the culture you're growing. We think the more useful reference point is your own intended culture, measured consistently enough that you can prove progress against it.

Are both platforms Australian?

Yes. Culture Amp was founded in Melbourne in 2009 and remains headquartered there; Compono is Brisbane-based. Either way, your data has a local home.
