The Challenge
In response to recent road safety accidents involving ultra-high-powered vehicles (UHPV), the Government of South Australia Department of Infrastructure and Training (SA DIT) committed to introducing legislation to ensure that only drivers with knowledge of UHPV safety features and having the right attitude could operate a UHPV.
All existing and new UHPV drivers need to demonstrate competency to hold a new U class licence. Although much smaller in number than regular drivers, existing UHPV drivers tended to be affluent and well-educated males. These drivers had not been required to pass a course or test in the past before first driving a UHPV, but now they would be required to do so.
The main challenge was to ensure that the content and assessment of a course were engaging to a UHPV driver and completely relevant to safety. But more than this, the instructional design needed to be very sensitive in terms of tone and how the content spoke to users.
Key Objectives
- Engage the Target Users: Recognising that many had wide experience and knowledge of UHPVs and that they needed to be kept ‘on side’.
- Present Core Concepts Clearly: Technical and safety content needed to be clearly illustrated. Understanding of concepts needed to be checked.
- Maximise User Convenience: Enable users to access the test remotely, removing the need to be tested on core knowledge at an onsite location.
The Solution
In partnership with SA DIT, Compono and Nexefy developed the U Class Licence Course, an online UHPV licensing platform that blends accessible education and assessment into one seamless, user-friendly experience. The scope of this course included discovery, design, development, and implementation phases.
The result was a short, fully accessible and visually engaging online course with integrated assessment. Essential safety features and risks are communicated through clear 3D videos and animations, interactive challenges, and useful downloads.
The 15-question U Class Licence Knowledge Test allows applicants to complete the U class licensing process on any device, at their own pace.

Key components include:
- Effective learning design: including media variety, regular concept checking and review, controlled learner progression, and engagement of higher-order thinking skills.
- Scenario-Based Demonstrations: Simulated driving comparisons show users the effects on vehicle control of hazards or poor vehicle settings.
- Safety attitude focused: Emphasises why a vehicle’s safety equipment exists and why it must be used.
- WCAG 2.1 AA features: compliant image colour contrast and alternative text, video captions and transcripts.
Results & Impact
The U Class Licence Course is a world-first in licensing UHPV drivers and sets a benchmark for digital licensing of that type. It has been a crucial component for South Australia in implementing new legislation, both administratively and educationally.
U-class licence applicants have received the course positively in terms of the relevance of the messaging and the use of visuals.
The course’s intuitive design, interactive scenarios, and accessibility features have also driven strong engagement and have been recognised with awards:
- Recognised with a LearnX Award:
- Diamond for Best Health and Safety Training 2024

I appreciate the information conveyed within the course and thought it was well prepared and informative as well as engaging during all stages. A job well done by the development team.

Quite Interactive, and I enjoyed the videos as well. l I like how it gave the view from both perspectives

The course is a good summary of what you need to be aware of, made its points very clear. Would be good for all drivers to do. Videos demonstrated the concepts.
