USE CASE
Behavioural Intervention
(Drink Driving Reform)
Beyond compliance. Real behaviour change.
Helping drink drivers transform attitudes, not just tick a box.
The Challenge
Drink driving continues to be one of the leading causes of serious road trauma in Australia. Traditional court-mandated interventions relied on punitive measures—like licence suspensions and fines—without delivering lasting behaviour change.
The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads identified a persistent issue: many offenders were reoffending, often within months.
-
High Recidivism: Repeat drink driving offences were a significant and ongoing concern.
-
Minimal personal reflection: Offenders often viewed existing programs as compliance-driven rather than transformative.
-
Access inequality: In-person sessions disadvantaged regional participants and those with accessibility barriers.

The Solution
Compono worked with the Queensland Government to design and deliver a digital Behavioural Intervention Course (Short Course) grounded in behavioural science and values-based learning. The solution is trauma-informed, flexible, and designed to shift attitudes—not just deliver content.
Participants engage with emotionally impactful stories from real crash survivors and their families. They complete a series of interactive modules that challenge them to reflect on personal risk-taking, social influences, and decision-making. Every participant builds a personalised behaviour change plan to support future choices.

Key features include:
-
Trauma-informed content: Real stories from crash survivors, paramedics, and victims' families.
-
Personal behaviour plan: Each participant leaves with a personalised commitment plan to reduce reoffending.
-
Interactive reflection: Scenario-based activities help participants internalise learning.
-
Dual format delivery: Fully accessible digitally or via a printable workbook for regional or low-connectivity environments.
-
Analytics and traceability: Governments gain real-time data on completions and engagement.

“Students won’t just learn the road rules; they’ll learn why the rules exist, and experience the consequences of poor driving behaviour.”

"I just got goosebumps, that makes me feel like I never want to do that [drink and drive] again."

"This takes me back to the actual event that I lost my licence… and a lot of older emotions…to remember that you have been down that path before; why would you do that again?"
