The Challenge
As part of a reform of the motorcycle rider training process, the South Australian Department of Infrastructure and Training (SA DIT) wanted to ensure that trainees were better prepared when they attended onsite basic motorcycle training. The existing process was reliant on trainees reading the jurisdiction’s handbook for motorcycle riders before practical training.
The result of this was an inconsistent level of knowledge and varying attitudes across training participants.
The primary challenge was to ensure, through a digital solution, that all learner motorcycle riders arrived at practical training with the minimum required level of knowledge.
Key Objectives
- Transform Handbook Content: Shifting the focus from facts on a page to highly interactive, scenario-based learning to better prepare learners for real riding conditions.
- Ensure All Learners Meet Minimum Standards: Learners knowledge is measured to make sure they are competent to attend practical training.
- Eliminate Geographic Barriers: Enable users to access the test remotely, removing the need to be tested on core knowledge at an onsite location.
- Promote Safe Riding Behaviours: Adding the development of responsible attitudes and mindsets to knowledge learning.
The Solution
In partnership with SA DIT, Compono and Nexefy developed myRiderSafe, an online learner licensing platform that blends accessible education and assessment into one seamless, user-friendly experience. The scope of myRiderSafe online project was extensive, encompassing discovery, design, development, and implementation phases.
The result was a fully accessible and comprehensive online course with integrated assessment that teaches essential motorcycle safety concepts through a mix of real-life video stories, branching scenarios, and interactive challenges. It augments motorcycle licensing in South Australia and allows learners to complete an important part of the licensing process on any device, at their own pace.

Key components include:
- Effective learning design: including media variety, regular concept checking and review, controlled learner progression, and engagement of higher order thinking skills.
- Reliable & valid assessment: carefully calibrated summative test components to ensure a fair measurement of competency.
- Values & attitudes focus: Emphasises why rules exist and encourages a lifelong development of responsible riding behaviour—not just rule memorisation.
- WCAG 2.1 AA features: compliant image colour contrast and alternative text, video captions and transcripts.
Results & Impact
myRiderSafe has strengthened the licensing process in South Australia and is an exemplar for leveraging existing written content into accessible and effective digital education. Learner and returning motorcycle riders alike have noted the positive effect the course has had on their awareness of the risks of motorcycle riding.
The myRiderSafe online course has also removed some of the burden on onsite trainers of transmitting a high volume of critical information to trainees in a face-to-face format. Now, every trainee arrives with the minimum required knowledge.
The course’s intuitive design, interactive scenarios, and accessibility features have also driven strong engagement.

This system has been significantly improved since I took my learners in ~2008. Congrats.

It was a detailed course, it didn’t feel like so much information that I couldn’t take in or remember any of it, it felt more like gradual information and definitely the way to learn!

Well-informed course. Great work designing the rider course and informing the bike riders about the safety of their own and other road users' safety!

Very well put together. As far as online training goes, it was interesting and kept me feeling involved.
